3D product configurator development

Real-time, browser-based configurators that let customers build the exact product they want and see it before they buy. I run six of them, live, across six sectors.

The problem a 3D product configurator solves

A made-to-order product has more combinations than anyone can photograph. Customers are asked to pick a finish, a size and a fitting from a dropdown, then imagine the result — so they hesitate, ask sales to mock something up, and the order stalls. Every option you add makes the catalogue harder to photograph and the decision harder to make.

How Dawar Mustaqeem builds a 3D product configurator

  1. 01

    Model preparation

Your CAD or DCC geometry is retopologised and reduced to a real-time budget, then exported to glTF with Draco compression. This is where most configurator projects succeed or fail — a 200 MB CAD assembly cannot ship to a phone.

  2. 02

    Option and material system

Every configurable dimension becomes data rather than a bespoke branch: materials, meshes, transforms and visibility driven by a single option model, so adding a new finish is a data change, not a rebuild.

  3. 03

    Rules and pricing

Valid combinations, dependencies and exclusions are enforced in one place, with live price calculation as the configuration changes. Invalid states are made unreachable rather than validated after the fact.

  4. 04

    Commerce integration

The finished configuration is serialised to something your systems can act on — a quote, a cart line, a production spec — and wired into your existing checkout, CRM or ERP.

  5. 05

    Performance budget

Held to a mid-range Android device, not a workstation: draw calls, texture memory and time-to-first-render are tracked as build constraints so the experience holds up on the hardware customers actually use.

What a 3D product configurator build includes

  • A configurator that runs in the browser with no plugin or app install
  • An option model your team can extend without a developer
  • Live pricing tied to the configuration
  • Shareable configuration links and a serialisable production spec
  • Mobile performance verified on real mid-range hardware

Common questions about 3D product configurators

How long does a product configurator take to build?

A single product line with a handful of options is typically four to six weeks. Multi-product catalogues with dependent rules and ERP integration run longer. The variable is almost never the rendering — it is the option rules and how clean the source geometry is.

Do you need our CAD files?

Yes, in some form — STEP, IGES, native CAD or an existing DCC model all work. Part of the engagement is converting that geometry into something that renders in real time on a phone, which is a different job from making it look right in a rendering package.

Will it work on mobile?

Yes. Configurators are built to a mid-range Android performance budget rather than a desktop one, because that is where most customers actually configure. Geometry, textures and draw calls are constrained accordingly from the start.

Can it connect to our existing pricing and ordering systems?

Yes. The configuration is serialised into whatever shape your backend needs — a quote, cart line or production specification — and integrated with your existing commerce, CRM or ERP rather than replacing it.
